Careers of the Month – PE

As part of our Careers curriculum, each month we focus on a different subject within school, and how different careers and future aspirations / opportunities link to these subjects.

This month our focus is PE. As well as the children taking part in different careers lessons in class across school focusing on PE, such as How do we keep fit? (including fitness by Joe Wicks, What is a sports coach? and How do you become a physiotherapist?, we also have our monthly careers assembly where we invite a visitor in linked to the focus subject to speak to the children.

This month, we had a very special visitor but a familiar face. Mrs Clifton, HLTA at Aston Hall, shared in assembly her career within sport, which culminated in her representing Great Britain at The Olympics in swimming. She shared a wonderful Powerpoint that you can see below that included some wonderful memories of her career in sport, including the highs and lows of being a world class athlete. She brought in some memorabilia, including her Commonwealth Games medals and shared wonderful stories; even meeting our late Queen, Elizabeth 2nd.

Mrs Clifton’s career in sport has led her to where she is in her career today, and is still heavily involved within the swimming community, including cheering on her daughter who is following in her footsteps.

Y5ME got to spend more time with her and asked her more questions.  We couldn’t quite believe that she competed in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics and were all surprised to hear that she actually met Queen Elizabeth II.

Everyone really enjoyed looking at her medals and learning about her career as a swimmer, we now have a few people in class who would like to follow in Mrs Clifton’s footsteps!

Thank you to Mrs Clifton for sharing her amazing story, and we look forward to next month’s careers assembly.
