It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we put up the fence and began creating our sensory garden – and what a transformation it has been! The path is now marked out and ready to explore, with exciting and unusual climbing plants beginning to flower. Thanks to the generosity of Guilthwaite Nursery, we’ve been able to plant a variety of sensory plants, including buddleia, which has been attracting plenty of butterflies.
Earlier this year, our sweet peas bloomed beautifully over the arch, filling classrooms with fresh flowers throughout the summer term, and even brightening the homes of our school community over the holidays. We’re also excited to be adding a small water feature soon, funded by a former parent as a thank you for the wellbeing support their child received while here.
The garden now has enough seating for a whole class, with picnic tables kindly donated by Elmwood Farm. This means it can be used not only as a unique outdoor classroom but also as a peaceful space for children who need time to regulate or reflect. Creating these opportunities for outdoor learning and supporting pupil wellbeing is a key part of WPT’s commitment to giving students the tools they need to thrive, both academically and personally.
Over the coming months, we plan to continue adding new plants and sensory features, as well as gravelling the pathways, to make this beautiful garden an even more inviting space for learning, wellbeing, and connection with nature.
