Our Year 5/6 classes have made a brilliant start to their World War II history topic this term. They kicked things off by making their own evacuation suitcases, carefully thinking about what children at the time might have packed when leaving home. To deepen their understanding, they also took part in a range of outdoor activities linked to evacuation – a fantastic way to bring history to life and give them a real sense of what it might have felt like to be an evacuee.
As part of their novel study, Goodnight Mister Tom, pupils are exploring key World War II themes through reading and discussion. They have started their writing journey by creating thoughtful diary entries from the perspective of Willie, imagining what it would be like to begin a new life in Little Weirwold.
It’s been a brilliant start to the term, with the children settling into their new classes with confidence, throwing themselves into their learning, and showing real curiosity and enthusiasm for the weeks ahead.
